Total Immersion is the Best Way to Learn Chinese

If you have never heard of Total Immersion then you should check it out. In this article I’m going to talk about the best way to learn Chinese and how you can easily make it by yourself. It is the most efficient way according to people’s feedback. The Total Immersion Language learning is basically about putting yourself into an environment with the target language only. If you learn want to learn Chinese then you would learn it in a condition which only Chinese is used.
 
By learning from this method, you basically start to learn everything from the beginning in that target language. This is different from the traditional ways of learning a new language. Ideally, if you want to learn with Total Immersion way, you should set up the environment in China. Unfortunately, there are only a few people who have the chance to experience Total Immersion in China. However, there are also possibilities that you can make a Chinese only environment for yourself without being in China.

The most important key of learning a new language is to use it. If you take Chinese class every weekend, but after the class you are not using it at all. You are more likely to forget about what you learned. This is like using a tool, the more you use the more you are familiar with. But you probably want to ask how to make yourself the environment now.

In order to give you some inspiration I will tell you my story of learning English. While I was learning English in a total immersion school few years ago, I could not use any Chinese in the school at all. The only language I could speak was English. And that was the time it changed my mind of learning English. After I finished the course, I went home and basically took off almost everything in Chinese at home and then put a label with English on.

For example, I would post a label with “TV” on a Television and “Desk” on a desk. I was trying to do everything in English as much as possible in my personal life. That was the turning point of my English learning and also a turn point of my life (Because of my English skills I got better job opportunities).
 
So, here is exactly how you can do to make your home a Total Immersion Learning Environment. Try what I did like post labels with the Chinese names of all your facilities on them. Every day you will have a lot of chances to seen them and every time you see them is another reinforcement.

Play Chinese music at home, even you don’t understand, just play it as the background music. Try to watch Chinese TV program. Read Chinese books for more information. Just use Chinese as the language tool in your personal life to replace your native language. You can try to make your shopping list in Chinese, take or leave notes for yourself in Chinese.

The best of best way is to do something you like in Chinese. One of my friends likes to play guitar and he start to learn guitar in English with all resources in English since he started to learn Chinese. He calls it killing two birds with one stone.
 
There is only one thing I want to remind you before you start. If you don’t have any basics of Chinese and you are absolutely starting from the ground, this method might be too difficult for you.
